Parents’ Tips on Making Your Baby’s Haircut a Fun Experience

bellamysorganic

If your baby fears the hairdresser’s chair, you are definitely not alone. BabyCenter shares these top tips from experienced parents, which may make the next haircut (slightly) less of an ordeal….

  1. Do some practice runs by playing ‘hairdressers’ with your child. One parent suggested using kitchen tongs to mimic the sound and appearance of scissors, and then moving them around your baby’s head to get him or her used to the sensation.
  2. If a doll has a haircut at the same time or before your child, it can also help reduce fear around the experience. Or they can watch you get your hair cut.
  3. Some salons are designed especially for children, with toys and other distractions to keep them occupied during the appointment. See if there is one near you.
  4. When nothing else works, bribery can be an option – sometimes all that is needed is the promise of a treat following good behaviour at the hairdresser.
  5. Sometimes babies may play up because they know they can get your attention. You can try asking a babysitter or other person close to your child if they would try taking him to the hairdresser – he or she may actually behave far better in this situation.

What was your baby’s first haircut experience like? Do you have any tips?

Important Notice to Parents and Guardians

  • Breast milk is the best for babies. The World Health Organisation recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. Unnecessary introduction of bottle feeding or other food and drinks will have a negative impact on breastfeeding. After six months of age, infants should receive age-appropriate foods while breastfeeding continues for up to two years of age or beyond. Consult your doctor before deciding to use infant formula or if you have difficulty breastfeeding.
