How to Start Your Baby off on Solids

Start Your Baby off on Solids

The age at which a baby should be introduced to solid food depends on the individual child. Four to six months of age is the general recommendation, according to The Bub Hub, but parents should also consider factors such as:

  • whether their baby is interested in the food being eaten around them
  • if they are able to sit with support and hold their head up
  • if they are already pretending to chew

The Bub Hub also recommended starting the process of moving to solid foods by trying puréed cereals which your baby should be able to swallow without difficulty. After this food is accepted, give it a few days to make sure there are no issues with allergies. If all is well, fruit and vegetables are usually next. It is important to introduce new foods one at a time and always allow a few days before trying another new food in case of food sensitivities or allergies.

Important Notice to Parents and Guardians

  • Breast milk is the best for babies. The World Health Organisation recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. Unnecessary introduction of bottle feeding or other food and drinks will have a negative impact on breastfeeding. After six months of age, infants should receive age-appropriate foods while breastfeeding continues for up to two years of age or beyond. Consult your doctor before deciding to use infant formula or if you have difficulty breastfeeding.
